The Smithsonian Institution tackled the tough conversations with their pointed exhibit, Our Shared Future: Reckoning With Our Racial Past. Like the in-person experience, the digital exhibit sought understanding through stories, and empowerment through resources for parents, teachers, and civic leaders.

“When did you first become aware of your race?”
Our Shared Future led with tough questions and explored a delicate balance: building bridges without pulling punches. To achieve the nuanced “consensual discomfort” for visitors, experience design teams partnered with Smithsonian experts, communications strategists, social researchers, and community representatives. The resulting content mix was sometimes devastating, sometimes hopeful, and bolstered by the integrity of one of America’s most trusted organizations.
